Is Amniosense the Diagnostic method of the Future?

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on the AmnioSense pads say: “The early detection of leaking amniotic fluid, and appropriate management, may lead to a reduction in maternal and neonatal morbidity.”

An independent evaluation by NICE has confirmed the accuracy of AmnioSense pads, concluding that using the liners, alongside changes to clinical practices in the community, should be encouraged.

It is common for pregnant women to experience intimate incontinence during pregnancy, however it is difficult to determine whether it is urine or amniotic fluid which can be worrying for pregnant women. 

AmnioSense™ pads, which look like a panty liner, can detect the difference between urine and amniotic fluid by changing to a blue/green colour when amniotic fluid is detected.

Until now, pregnant women would have to undergo a speculum and a swab test. AmnioSense pads could help 42% of women avoid this procedure. For a comparison of AmnioSense to other methods, see the chart below.

Community Midwife, Emma Herbert, said: “AmnioSense gives women control by providing a simple, effective, at-home test which allows them to differentiate between a pregnancy anxiety and a complication where medical review is needed urgently.”

A single visit to an antenatal unit costs £147 and research shows that 38% of women who used AmnioSense did not need to attend an appointment because they were able to confirm for themselves that leaks were harmless.

The AmnioSense pads could save the NHS thousands of pounds per year, according to Dr Phil Stillman.

“There are around 695,000 live births in England and Wales every year, and around a third of those will notice some sort of leak – which adds up to the saving of £880,000 [for the NHS] per year, not to mention untold concern.”

Premature rupture of the membrane affects around 10% of pregnancies, with 1 in 50 pregnancies affected by preterm premature rupture of the membrane (when the membrane is ruptured during pregnancy at 37 weeks gestation).
